Russian casualty returns for the entire 19th century report non-fatal casualties as divided into "ranen" and "kontuzhen." It seems to me that "ranen" ("wounded") refers to wounds involving penetration of the body, while "kontuzhen" ("contused") seems to involve any injury in which the skin was not penetrated. The number of "kontuzhen" is usually less than the number of "ranen," but not by a great amount.
