Re: Dumas' "San Felice"

Dumas wrote several books on the Revolution period : "Les blancs et les bleus" "Le chevalier de St Hermine"...

He was no fan of Napoleon : his father, cavalry general Dumas, was renown for his strength and bravery, once stopping an austrian cavalry party nearly alone, on a narrow alpine bridge (hence his surname, the Horatius Coclès of the Tyrol).

But General Dumas was also too frank for the general in chief in Italy, who later will show distrust toward coloured officers (see Claude Ribbe, "Alexandre Dumas, le dragon de la Reine" and Bernard Gainot, "Les officiers de couleur dans les armées de la République et de l’Empire (1792-1815)" ).
He died in neapolitan gaol when coming back from Egypt with a few other officers.

This probably influenced the most researched novel of Alexandre Dumas, "La San Felice", which tell the eventful war between french Republic and Sicilian Kingdom, with a galery of most colourful characters (among who, the royal couple, Emma Hamilton and Nelson, Fra Diavolo, admiral Caracciolo, the marquess of San Felice, and the people of Naples).

I don't know if an english translation is available by now. The charge against the Sicilian monarchy, the Hamilton and Nelson are rather overweighted.
