Re: Another Bernadotte story
In Response To: Another Bernadotte story ()

Thiers:

Dupas ... assailed on all sides by Bellegard's corps, which Archduke Charles himself had rallied, was obliged to give way and quit the plateau ... Oudinot broke off the attack on Baumersdorf, and Bernadotte, abandoning Wagram, which he had almost conquered, fell back on Aderklaa.

"first to beat a retreat", eh NB? Ah well, let us turn away, with some embarassment, from just one more of the fellow's (simulated?) tantrums.

By the way, Bernadotte's proclamation was intended for internal dissemination among the Saxon troops only (although he probably should have foreseen the press would get hold of it).
