I wasn't describing 'sampling' but research based on historical inquiry.
What you're describing is a Recommended Reading List, not a bibliography. Again, a bibliography is a listing of books consulted and used during the research for a paper or a book. And books listed in a bibliography are not all cited in the text. A works cited page are the works that are cited.
Seems to me that some folks are critical unnecessarily because they don't understand the difference of the three types of book listing that can be used in the back of a book or paper.
