French as lingua franca in Napoleonic times

For the ones who want to know more on this subject I would recommend to read "Consequences of the prevalence of the French language", a letter written by John Matthew Gutch, an English journalist and historian, (1776-1861)
Gutch fulminated against his fellow countrymen who lard their sentences unnecessarily and pretentiously with French words. The past political and military struggles on the continent were, in his view, the result of the French preponderance itself due to the excessive influence of the French language.
Speaking a language also means in part embracing the culture in which it is embedded and the people it comes from are favorably disposed.
In the dissemination of the subversive works of French Enlightenment philosophers, Gutch saw a kind of sign of the French military conquest politics during the Republic and the Empire:
"The prevalence of the French language" was always the means of sending their books into every part of Europe; and their political and irreligious opinions were disseminated, which prepared the way for the invasion of their armies. Language belongs to the patrimony of a nation and speaking or writing in a competitive language is dismissed as a 'disloyal and unpatriotic custom'.
The journalist therefore advocated reintroducing Latin for diplomatic contacts and international treaties because of its neutral character.
