Re: Wellington's First Battle-Order of Battle

The 42nd Foot were probably left to guard the river crossing near Middlerode or Heeswyck. But the 44th received casualties on the 15th so are most likely to have been with Wesley at Boxtel/Schyndel, as described by their Historical Record.

I bow to your extensive work on the subject, Garry, but to be fair the 1887 'HIstorical Record' goes no farther than describing 'the 33rd and 44th, the 12th and 42nd [ie.THIRD BRIGADE] being kept in reserve," which, given what we know of the other three battalions' involvement that day, is a little short on accurate detail. Along with the work of the 42nd and 33rd covering lines of retreat, the 12th Regiment were out on one flank where, along with a Hessian battalion, they suffered something of a debacle, losing fifty-odd men captured and both battalion guns.

The loss of the 44th regiment "being limited to four men missing" (Carter, 1887) offers little additional clue to the battalion's role that day or where on the field they were posted.
