Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. I figured that there had to be some sort of internal command division, as many brigades had multiple regiments with one battalion instead of the entire battalion complement of a few regiments.

So, it sounds as though internal command structures were adhoc or created as needed with two or three or even more commands within a brigade? This seems to be a rather unique organization. Was it by plan, needs of the moment, etc.?
