Prussian brigade structure 1808 to 1815
In Response To: Prussian Brigade command ()

The following was posted elsewhere some years ago by me. It is only a general outline, during the campaigns the composition of the brigades varied according to circumstances, of course.

***end of 1808 until 1812***

Six peace time brigades, situated in and named after the provinces and led
by a "Brigadegeneral" (not a military rank, but a function). Each brigade
consists of two infantry regiments with their combined grenadier batallion,
all under the responsibility of a "Brigadier" and three cavalry regiments,
also under the responsibility of a "Brigadier". No artillery. The brigade in
Brandenburg was stronger, as it included the guards, and two brigades had an
extra batallion of Jäger and Schützen respectively.

The artillery was grouped together in three "Artillerie-Brigade"s (in fact:
regiments), each of 12 foot and 3 horse companies, each brigade led by a
"Brigadier" and all the artillery having Prinz August von Preußen as
"Brigadegeneral".

In addition, there was a "Brigadier" for the horse artillery, responsible
for its tactical training, whereas in disciplinary matters the horse
companies remained subordinate to the Brigadier of the "Artillerie-Brigade"
they belonged to.

From 1810 onwards, General v. Yorck was "General-Inspecteur der leichten
Truppen" and "Inspecteur der Jäger-Bataillone". That meant he was
responsible for the tactical training of the fusileer, Jäger and Schützen
batallions as well as the hussar regiments anfd their fitness to perform the
special field duties of light troops.

This double subordination of specialist units does not only sound
complicate, it is and was, and sometimes caused quarrels between the
superiors.

***the 1812 auxiliary corps***

By order of 12th march 1812 it was to be composed of three brigades of
infantry, each commanded by a Brigadier and consisting of two regiments of
three batallions each. The two cavalry brigades of this corps were also
commanded by a Brigadier and consisted of three regimnents each. The
artillery had its own commander.

During the campaign, the brigades got one or two batteries attached to them,
and probably sometimes an infantry brigade would receive some cavalry when
necessary. The avant garde which was formed during the campaign consisted of
fusileer batallions, horse artillery and cavalry regiments.

***1812 tactical regulations***

They were published only late in 1812, but prepared in the years before.
Their fifth chapter was the same in all the three regulations (there was one
regulation for cavalry, infantry and artillery each) and had for the
standard brigade in the field the same composition as the 1808 peace time
brigade, plus an extra foot and an extra horse battery.

These three regulations do not talk of a Brigadier of infantry, but mention
a Brigadier of cavalry in one place (quoted earlier in this thread), so it
is obvious that these positions have not been discarded.

***spring campaign 1813***

The situation was quite chaotic, with new batallions formed and the
batallions and squadrons of the combined 1812 regiments being exchanged
gradually.

Generally, it seems that the 1812 regulations were followed, for example the
Brandenburgische Brigade (v. Röder) had - according to Plotho, vol. 1,
Beilagen, p. 109 - in the battle of Groß-Görschen on 2nd May 1813 one
Brigadier of cavalry and infantry each:

Obristlieutenant von Tippelskirch:
guard infantry regiment (3 btl.),
Normal-Bataillon,
freiwilliges Jäger-Bataillon der Garde
Garde-Jäger-Btl.
Leib-Grenadier-Bataillon
1. Ostpreuß. Gren.Btl.
IIIrd Btl. of the Leib-Inf.-Rgt.
Garde-Fuß-Batterie (No. 4)

Obristlieutenant von Katzler:
2 Squ. of the Brandenburg. Hus.Rgt.
2 Squ. of the Brandenb. Ulanen-Rgt.
4 Squ. of the Westpr. Ul.-Rgt.
Reitende Batterie No. 8

For the other brigades, the structure was basically the same

***order of batte of 10th August 1813***

Each infantry brigade, commanded by a "Brigade-Chef", consisted of one line
regiment, the reserve regiment of the same number and one Landwehr regiment,
one (line or Landwehr) cavalry regiment and one 6pounder foot battery, the
first two being under the orders of a "Brigade-Commandeur" executing the
"Brigade-Chef"s orders, the rest under the direct command of the
"Brigade-Chef". If there were two Landwehr regiments (this was the case only
in the 1st and 7th brigade), they had an extra "Brigade-Commandeur" for
themselves.

Four of the grenadier batallions were part of the 1st brigade (which had no
line regiment), only the 3rd and 5th brigade still had a grenadier batallion
attached. Several brigades had two companies of Schützen or Jäger attached,
and of course some battallions had got their extra companies of "Freiwillige
Jäger".

Excemptions from these rules are the rule.

The orders of battle for the Prussian army of 10th August 1813 I know go
back to Plotho, vol. 2, Beilagen, pp. 2 ff., who gives the composition of
the 1st Brigade as follows [der, die = the]:

############
1. Die 1ste Brigade, Chef der Obrist v. Steinmetz.
Generalstab, Cap. v. Kaufberg, Lieut, v. Lolhöfel.
Adjudantur, Cap. v. Lützow, Lieut. Graf v. Henkel.

Brigade-Comd. der Maj. v. Hiller

[4 batallions of grenadiers, 2 companies of Jäger]

Brig.-Comd. der Obrist v. Losthin

[2 regiments of Landwehr infantry of 4 batallions each]

4 Esq. des 2ten Leib-Husaren-Reg., Comd. der Maj. v. Stössel,

die 6pfünd. Fußbatterie No. 2. Lieut. v. Lange
############

***1815 campaign***

Ideally, each brigade consisted of two line and one Landwehr regiment, 2
squadrons of (line or Landwehr) cavalry and a 6pounder foot battery. Of
course, there were many aberrations from this rule.

Hope this clarified a bit,

Oliver
