Re: Albuera - British converged light companies

While the Royal Military Calendar is usually accurate, I wonder if it meant the 2/39th Foot's light company only?

Captain Charles Carthew did not receive the Gold Medal for Albuera signifying that he had commanded a unit in the battle.

He was not the senior captain in his regiment at Albuhera and a regimental major was present, so lower in seniority to command an ad hoc formation. The major only received the Silver Medal.

Carthew did not receive a brevet for Albuera. Four other captains did.

This work states only the light company.

"Capt. Charles Carthew, who commanded the light company, was publicly thanked by Maj.-Gen. Sir Wm Stewart...."

Was not Moyle Sherer, 34th Foot at Albuera? Recollections of the Peninsula.

Good hunting.
