On page 404 of the same volume, it reads, regarding Saxon troops after Leipzig, '...the two crack regiments of Saxon cuirassiers and a number of Saxon officers and men who had received the Legion of Honor voluntarily remained with Napoleon until he sent them home with a letter of appreciation.'

There are also excellent selections on the Confederation of the Rhine in the older volumes of La Sabretache: 1899 on the Regiment de Francfort; 1903 on Baden; 1906 on the Saxons; 1908 on the Saxon Duchies; 1909 on the Bavarians; and 1911 on Hesse-Darmstadt.

Elting is wrong of course, - more than two Saxon cuirassiers regiments stayed with the King or did not defect - as K.K. he obviously ignored German sources and has no clue what really happened in 1813.

By the way - one of the highest decorated officer, Legion d'Honneur - Thielmann, see Sauzey - was one of the first Saxons to defect, way before Leipzig. those officiers who got the legion and were in the units which defected, defected with them.

Did they cherish to be awarded the legion in 1813?

Holtzendorff : „ Gegen 10 Uhr erschien der Kaiser auf seiner Falbe, ritt längs der Front der aufgestellten Truppen hinunter, kehrte zur Mitte des 7. Corps vor die sächsischen Division zurück, ließ durch den Befehl „Formez le cercle!“ einen Kreis formieren und berief sämtliche Offiziere und Unterofffiziere vor die Front. Nachdem Napoleon „Roullement!“ gerufen und dies von den Franzosen geschlagen worden, hielt er mit lauttönender Stimme eine Ansprache, welche der General Collincourt periodenweise übersetzen mußte… Sie bleib … völlig verfehlt. – Es mussten hierauf Mehrere zum Orden der Ehrenlegion vorgeschlagen werden…. You see the dangers and fails just relying on Elting, half truth, simplifications, not good enough for a serious discussion on that topic.
