Re: Sergeant Major British Army

All but one of the sergeant majors of the 5/60th were commissioned, and that one was KIA. Sgt Maj. James Kent from the 43rd was also commissioned into the battalion on the recommendation of Wellington. Many of them did spend some time as adjutant, including Kent, but then went on to serve with the companies or were promoted into other corps. Sgt Maj Starck ended up as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Royal York Rangers. Cpl. Joahann Schwalbach was commissioned into Portuguese service, stayed on after the war and ended up a viscount and general. But most made the step from ensign to lieutenant and then got no further before the war ended. One, Lieutenant Charles Sawatsky was KIA in 1811.
