I think that we've reached the end of the road with this one, and I am very grateful for your assistance. I am now clearer about the financial situation inwhich Mr Fothergill found himself in later life, so you have saved me from a basic blunder in whatever I might eventually write up. I think that I'll have to accept that the widow's pension form is a 'red herring'!
