I suspect that their lack of independent wealth increased the chance of them being purchased over, hence the move to less desirable regiments. I've never got the impression of a specific barrier to their advancement though. Being a foreign corps the 5/60th were probably not representative but I also found no evidence of any prejudice against them, and 50% of the other officers were British/Irish.
