Examples of subterfuge
In Response To: pennons for subterfugue ()

Hi

There must be other examples - either embellished or even totally apocryphal

I recall reading somewhere about the covering up of highland distinctions on the bonnets (of 71st?) as an elaborate, deceitful scheme to trick French into thinking the unit (that was also wearing greatcoats) were Portuguese. I’m not sure but perhaps it was from the journal of TS or the other anonymous writer from this regiment.

The other was the French unit, I think at Talavera, calling out “Espanyoles” so they would not be fired upon.

Can anyone else recall these examples, where they occurred and what the sources were?

The first one did appear to be quite elaborate and I wondered, when I read it, if there was any substantiation of the claims made. The second is perhaps much more plausible.

Best wishes

Ant
