Indeed, one might add that among Napoleon's most phenomenal achievements were (a) creating an alliance between two bitter enemies (Portugal and Spain), and (b) creating another (literally unholy in many eyes) alliance between Catholic Spain and a Protestant United Kingdom.
That was his special talent, really - reconciling former enemies. By the end of 1814 he had also succeeding in bringing together Austria and Prussia, Austria and Russia,, Russia and Sweden, Russia and Britain, Sweden and Britain, even Prussia and Saxony. He was quite the peace-maker. I wonder if Nobel Peace Prizes can be awarded retrospectively? Maybe we should get a petition together.
