Re: Napoleon or Bonaparte?
In Response To: Napoleon or Bonaparte? ()

Dear Anthony,

I've only just returned to this site after few weeks absence and this thread has indeed veered away from the original subject somewhat. That said, I enjoyed reading everyone's comments and many thanks to all for responding.

To return to the issue of the Emperor's name. After some thought, I've decided to refer to him as Napoleon predominantly but use 'General Bonaparte, Bonaparte or the First Consul' to refer to him during his early career. After 1804 I naturally use Napoleon but also refer to him as 'the Emperor' now and then simply for the sake of variety if nothing else. In all seriousness, it seems boringly repetitive if you scan down pages of copy and see Napoleon at the beginning of every other paragraph.

I have included an explanatory paragraph justifying my reasons for this. I hope this will please most readers but while researching this work I have come to the conclusion that the man himself would probably say 'use any of those names you wish as long as you give me proper credit for my achievements!' I find that thought reassuring.

Best Regards,

David
