Tony,
Following Dawson the first mention of that episode was written by de Mauduis in 1836, and ascribes the command of the detachment from the 1st rgt light infantry to Legros, and he also notes that the French attacked the British Guards outside the farm, pushed them back through the main gate and follewed them inro the courtyard. Legros was killed at Wateroo but how and where is still not known. Colonel Cubières makes it clear the the offivcer involved was called Bonnet.
Checking the officers' record for th regiment, there wasn't an officer called Bonnet
Piétet, of the HQ says, based on the letter Cubières had sent him, that the attack was led by an officer called Bouche - this officer was a lieutenant in 3rd Cie 2nd battalion. (died in 1839)
So Dawson states that the story of Cubières and of Piétet are both not trustworthy. and that the name of Legros is only a myth that that still continueb to survive.
Best wishes
