Thank you. The economic, employment status and birth place of recruits are all very interesting topics for me.
Did not the (English) attestation, still in force even from 1791, require the man to provide details of his trade and also the parish in which he was born? I gather that although the requirement to attest to being protestant was dropped, relating to the Catholic Relief Act, the requirement remained in force in Scotland for a couple more years. So, did the Irish version of the attestation not have the requirements for trade and birth place (parish) to be stated – or were these details simply not recorded even though required?
I note that Haythornthwaite cites a study of 1825 providing details of trades in Ireland and a detailed study of the 23rd that had established trade of recruits ff 100 and 101. I think that addition of employment / economic status would help explain a lot about the recruits to the 27th and other designated Irish regiments – but I’m not offering!
Many thanks once again for the reply
Best wishes
