I found mention in Rev A. Clerk's biography "Memoir of Colonel John Cameron", 1858 (p.32) of letters he sent to Scotland from Egypt in 1801 where he is helping some of his men with financial matters back home & also the sending of money back home. This attention to his men's welfare may have been peculiar to Highland regiments, clan loyalities & highland chiefs. When Cameron was killed at Quatre Bras on him was found a list of men he had recruited into the 92nd when he first joined the regiment.
I'm sorry but I have lost the link to Clerk's book, but it is or was downloadable on the internet.
Regards, Peter.
