Of the retreat to Corunna you wrote: 'unfortunately most of these women and their children died
during the retreat in late 1808 and 1809. For this reason, wives were not
permitted to accompany the Walcheren expedition.' I would appreciate a reference
for that statement- thanks. Is it known, or has it been estimated, how many (or percentage) women and/or children died during that campaign?
You also said that the order came down to cut queues in 1809 (Jan. according to the Soldier of the 71st).
Do you know when officers stopped wearing white powered wigs? My hero lands with Wellington
in Portugal on 1st August, 1808 wearing one.
I would also like a more complete reference for 'Thorpe's memoir of the Corunna campaign' which I am not familiar with and would like find.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
