Soldiers were paid while serving, and I know at different times the army had a knack of 'nickel and diming' the troops to death, so they did not have any money after they were paid, but...

Was there a method for troops to send money/loot back to families? Are there any accounts of such transactions? Just wondering, for if not then a husband/father marching off to war back then was as good as dead in terms of providing for his family. What a shame.
