The phd does for me, however, point up both the best and worst about phds.
On the one hand a dedication to culture, sociology, and small group cohesion to the exclusion of logic. To the extent that differences in combat behaviour between armies apparently needs an in depth analysis of the individuals cultural phenomena as its starting point. Plus a vagueness on military matters that leads the author to declare the British 27th at Waterloo provides proof of the superiority of British small group cohesion versus the Dutch Belgian inferiority typified by their Brunswick (!!??) unit that retreated with low casualties.
On the other hand fantastic data and sources that are a mine of information no one would likely dig up and expose otherwise.
