In America during the War of Independence, one British Light infantry officer described rebel militia sniping from cover at British troops in transit, as rascals.. .skulking about the country engaging in a dirty dirty of tiraillerie.
It wasn't just in the War of the Revolution, but also in the War of 1812:
'The British, swear by St George and the Virgin Mary, they never met such a damned bloody minded set of fellows as those Yankees are-they march up against double their number of his majesties best troops as at their exercise-that the devils, even take deliberate aim and that his Majesties officers cannot take the field on horseback-without being murdered outright.'-George Howard.
Howard was describing American regulars, not militia, in this case.
