I knew that the English army was very different from the Austrians or Russians, regarding foreigners in their service, but, to read it stated so succinctly and powerful in these debates really drives home the point.
I have followed as much as possible the Duke of Brunswick, des schwarzen Herzogs and his Das schwarze Korps formed in 1809. The principle reason being that in the secret Convention of Vienna, the Austrians were willing to equip the Brunswick corp from Imperial armories but not for free. The duke had to pledge the income of his hereditary lands (lost to Napoleon in 1806) and make a down payment; included on the equipment list negotiated are 25 air rifles.
In my readings, it was also striking the deep feelings the British public had concerning their Brunswick allies-in-arms. Very romantic.
