The "context" of the description "provides" the understanding as I have come to see it. Thus, a "Colonne par peloton [or company]" is a single ballation while a "colonne par bataillon" would be more than one battalion each in "colonne". There is no need to keep "drilling down" in the description (although it have helped with understanding as in the several quotes). - R
