I believe there is a clear and distinct difference between using current social views (opinions) and using current social science in discussion of historical periods. Perhaps psychiatry is not a solid enough science for you.
When I was working Washington D.C., The Civil Service Commission initiated an early approach to the problem of substance abuse in the federal workforce. It asked the departments to provide an informal (a guess really) estimate of the number of alcoholics an the rolls with a view to establishing a base-line for more formal studies. The Justice Department's reply was jaw-dropper. "None or next to none. We have no problem with alcoholism because the vast majority of our employees are professionals." I can't give you a reference. I'm simply reporting my on-the-job experience.
