Perhaps a better example of British Military Justice is Admiral John Byng.
Byng's failure to relieve a besieged British garrison during the Battle of Minorca resulted in his court-martial were he was found guilty of failing to "do his utmost" to prevent Minorca falling to the French. He was sentenced to death and shot by firing squad, March 14, 1757.
Byng's execution helps to explain some of the aggressiveness of British captains.
