I understood that Turkey was a long term ally of France - which was why Talleyrand was supposed to go to the Porte to explain why one of its territories was being attacked.
Even if it was 'a legitimate target' Egypt posed no risk to France whereas England did - Bonaparte suggested the Egyptian project rather than risk getting egg on his face trying to invade England. The glory of General Bonaparte was more important that the safety of France.
