Col. Elting seems to have confused the much persecuted sect of the Barbets (better known as the Vaudois or Waldensians) with the partisan bands of Piedmontese ‘smuggler-brigands’ known as barbetti ('hounds').

Originally inhabitants of the French Dauphiné, the Calvinistic Barbets made their retreat in the high valleys above Turin- Valli Pellici, Chisone & Germanesca, while the Catholic barbetti operated in the mountain districts of Cuneese and Mondovi some way to the south. Some confusion arises from C17th punning references in Italian to the Barbets as ‘barbetti.’ encapsulated in the famous phrase: "Altre volte li lupi mangiavano li barbetti, mall tempo e venuto chi li Barbetti mangiano li lupi.".
