I agree with you about Herold: I give shelf space to two types of historian, those that provide detailed information with plenty of primary material and those that can be read simply for pleasure. Herold qualifies on both counts.
I do not keep any books which simply exist to argue one point of view over another: they are usually selective in their sourcing and seldom bear re-reading.
