My justification is the same as yours "It's an observation that I've made over twenty years (of following your posts) on the boards" I've enjoyed them immensely, but if you haven't got a hero complex with Napoleon you sure have been camouflaging it well. Just a personal impression, I'd be delighted for you to "prove me wrong".

It hardly strengthens your case on fair apportion of 'blame' if you use 'by right of conquest' as a defence. It's worth noting that Great Britain made no major territorial conquests on mainland Europe against Napoleon. All the battles fought, sieges undertaken, blood and treasure expended, resulted in the territory being handed over to the legitimate government. Where that was in question, one finally decided by international convention. Can you see why the difference between that and an acquisitive regime with a personality cult will result in a justifiably diverse opinion?

I'm mature enough to divorce the natural patriotism of someone who has served their country from my duty to historical enquiry. I don't like 'my country/regiment right or wrong' any more than 'Napoleon the genius that can do no wrong'.

Ours is an interpretive discipline, which means there is a fine line between judgement and prejudice. We all have cognitive bias, but to paraphrase Bomber Harris you seem to have the impression that you can accuse others of it, without having to having it pointed out in yourself. You have sown the wind, you should expect a liitle whirlwind?
