The French (and their allies) in Spain and Portugal used terror, pillage and extremely violent repression against civilians, regardless of sex or age, on a daily basis.
It was standard operating procedure and no official sanctions were ever used by the senior French commanders (except MAYBE Suchet on some occasions) to punish soldiers / officers for doing it.
Do you have any examples of such court martials, held to restore discipline and stop repeat offences?
