If the death of the people of the village was a deliberate act on the part of the French army, it bears an uncanny resemblance to an atrocity committed by the 2nd Waffen SS Division at Oradour in France in 1944.
If their deaths were accidental, the reputation of Napoleon's soldiers in the Peninsula, terrible as it is, is not quite so besmirched.
