treachery, or worse.
I see this motivation suggested for Bernadotte's actions on the 14th, but I have yet to see any reason for the suggestion. He might be incompetent, a cad and a bounder, but I don't see that his behavior on October 14th can be construed to be treachery or anything of the kind, unless there is something else that hasn't been mentioned.
For Bernadotte to be treacheous, or playing a double game, or purposely disobeying orders for his own gain, there has to be:
1. Motive, which means
2. Some advantage or gain for purposely wandering around without contacting the enemy.
What was it? What possible advantage could that behavior bring him? If the man was such a self-promoter, exactly how does being the only corps to fail to contact the enemy enhance his reputation?
