And I have no doubt, based on Davout's record, skill, and personality, that he took it as his mission to face what came at him. He commanded the best-trained and -led corps in the Grande Armee and they were more than up to the task, as the results showed.
Davout and his subordinates were tough, no-nonsense professionals for whom war was a profession. The one general who failed Davout at Auerstadt, Vialannes his cavalry commander, was relieved and sent to seek employment elsewhere.
