Thanks for the added information and quotes. Your previous post had quotes establishing Bernadotte as a good host, but not much more. In any case, I think Petre was only referring to the road between Apolda and Dornburg, but it isn't all that clear in his book.
It is clear that he hadn't received any orders directly and the orders he did have through Davout only confirmed what Napoleon's wishes were.
However, I am not clear on why you believe that Bernadotte was north of Naumburg when he halted his march @ 10pm? That means he would have had to march through the city, and it was a city, in the middle of the night and I have not read anything to suggest he did.
As far as I can tell, when he talked to Davout @ 4am, his army was south of Naumburg and on the road to Dornburg. Your quotes don't suggest anything diifferent from what I have translated.
