Let me get this right: are you saying that Davout, faced with an enemy force outnumbering his, did not notify his neighbours or request support? Is that good military practice? He got away with it, but if he hadn't he would have had more difficulty explaining that omission than ever Bernadotte had. Ill-disposed people might even have suggested he was trying to hog the glory for himself.
