The question is, when did they express this criticism? It is clear that after 1813 many French officers, not unreasonably, considered Bernadotte a traitor and that they tended to put the worst possible slant on his previous conduct. I don't think anything written in later memoirs against Bernadotte should be taken as fact. Of the officers quoted I would place little reliance on Marbot, Segur or Savary in this context.
Letters written at the time would be more convincing.
