this was from a discussion I had with Robert Ouvrad about the difference in words and their consquences
Robert Ouvrad schrieb folgende AntwortThis is given in "Davout et l'Art de la Guerre -Daniel Reichel - Paris 1975", which , as source, gives himself Bernadotte chef de geurre et dhef d'État - Girod de l'Ain - Paris, 1968) precising that Girod is citing in extenso the original order (Berthier to Davout), which he found in the Archives de la Guerre.
This order started with " Marschall Bernadotte received the order to go to Dornburg. IT IS MOSTLY IMPORTANT THAT HE IS ALREADY THERE".
BTW, one should note that Bernadotte, during this period, never received a direct order from Berthier!
Cheers
Robert
BTW, the Journal du 3e corps gives : "vous POURREZ marcher ensemble..."
while the original irder gives
Si le maréchal Bernadotte se trouvait avec vous, vous POURRIEZ marcher ensemble. Mais l'Empereur espère qu'il sera dans la position qu'il lui a indiquée à Dornburg. "
Not a small difference in french !
Cheers
